Standing Strong by hougaard Standing Strong by hougaard
This image is very 'South Africa'. Taken on Calitzdorp's side of the Swartberg mountains close to where the pass comes down.

It's amazing that there w old aloes didn't sway the least bit in a 15 second exposure in strong wind. Unluckily there was a 8ft game fence through which I had to shoot, so composition wasn't optimal and it was about 5 degrees in a strong wind.

5D II
16-35 II
polarizer and 0.6 hard grad used.

However, i actually think it would be better if the bottom half was cropped out, because the top is beautiful and the bottom a bit bright.

I love the mountain/sky/trees combo at the very right hand top. It's just perfect

in my opinion the foreground is too bright, infact i can see the transition between the sky and the ground in the mountain on the left, which is brighter at the bottom.
Anyway it's a very very nice image.

I take it the darker half circle at the top of the image, in the sky, is down to the slight wide angle using a CPL? Very nice composition wise considering, and superb colours, and clarity.

Haha awesome. :D I love how as you say, the aloes didn't move while the trees about did. ^^ Makes for a very interesting shot. And I like the composition! :+fav:

Weird, the aloes are made to look photoshopped in by the fact that everything else is moving! The tones etc are great though. As for the composition, maybe some kind of cropping could improve things, but exactly what sort of crop I have no idea. Maybe chop a little bit off the right?

Now this is a work of art. I was just looking at the work of Adrian Hollister (Forest at Sunrise) and this reminds me of it.
It the movement of the trees that draws me in. Brilliant composition to feature it.

It was probably nearly dark mate :)
CPLs are 2 stops too, so even if it was only a 4 second exposure that filter would make it a 15 second one.

Right, got to think that, it was probably darker...i know the difference between solid and grad, i use them both, but that's how i did react at first sight.
I'm curious about the aperture too..

Thanks for assist Tom

No worries mate. Well its Hougaard, so he'd want maximum sharpness so you can assume an f stop between say f8 and f16, would be my guess anyway :)

I've read that you're not entirely satisfied with this piece, but I have to say I love it. The way there are so many different hues and colours and tones, yet they all seem to match and the picture doesn't feel too cluttered. I particularly love the way the tips of the aloes contrast so much against the mountains.
