Natural Light : Nature Photo competition

It’s been quite a while since there was a major competition within the nature photography community and so I’ve decided to organize one to give something back to the community that has given me so much.

First things first, I have to market the competition so here goes….Winning one of the top 3 spots will be your launch to fame on Deviantart….18 months of subscriptions to be won, and features by some of the biggest and best landscape photographers on Deviantart namely….

AndyMumford Palafitico by AndyMumford

P0RG                  please don't fall, cloud by P0RG

pheelfresh        :thumb70540228:

foureyes            Starfish by foureyes

xMEGALOPOLISx         Structure of Simplicity by xMEGALOPOLISx

jjuuhhaa            Le cristal dore by jjuuhhaa

These people will also be the judges of the competition and they’re also sponsoring the prizes.

1st prize – 9 months subscription, features in 7 major journals and exclusive feature in the journal of foureyes

2nd prize – 6 months subscriptions, features in all journals except foureyes and joint feature with 1st place in  the journal of xMEGALOPOLISx

3rd prize – 3 month subscription and features in the journals of hougaard,andymumford,jjuuhhaa.p0rg,pheelfresh.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What are we looking for?

A well composed landscape photo…. The galleries of the judges will inspire you and give you an idea of what we’re looking for. Please don’t go to their galleries and think that you’ll never produce such an image…this competition is to inspire the community to get out and see how easy it actually is to take a brilliant photo if you’re out in nature for a sunset or three.

You can enter by sending me a note with a link to your submission. New deviations only.

The competition is open for entries from now until the last day of October so you all have a lot of time. Don’t rush it and don’t enter too early because you only get one entry!

I hope we get a lot of entries, anyone can enter but there will be certain standards/rules

New deviations only

No HDR

No photos of the sky

B+W is welcome

Architecture photos are also welcome for the people living in big cities

Some tips…..

The most important one is to get out and go shooting!

Small things like slanted horizons and too much black shadow or blown highlights will count against you.

Try to get the color as true as you possibly can.

Twilight is always more interesting

Here’s a tutorial that will help with any exposure problems for people who can’t afford nd filters hougaard.deviantart.com/journa…

I will post more info on how the judging is going to work next Sunday.

So get away from your desk and go shooting!

I have a question about the "No sky" rule. Does that literally mean no sky. Because, I also noticed that the rules say that an unlevel horizon will detract from the judging criteria. How can you have a horizon without sky?

Hey, what a flamewar this contest has provoked... Come on people, it's just a photo contest for amateurs, organised by amateurs (in financial terms). It's not about your bread and water!

This is great! I may give myself a chance on this.
And frankly, again that HDR discussion. Fuck! (pardon my french) Personally I love the rules, as they will force me to leave HDR aside and reach for an improvement in nature photography. I already have a scenario in mind. It may cost me a few days (motel as well) as I'll have to wait for the right time of day and the sky I hope to get.
Though I haven't really had a shot at serious landscape photography, I've been studying your EXIFs and Andy's comments so let's see how it goes. ;P If I don't enter it at least I'm sure I'll get a huge amount of positive experiences out of this.
Thank you!

HDR has done nothing more that put the 'Zone System of Photography' in the hands of all those who use HDR programs. Everything HDR results in has been done by photographers almost since the inception of photography.

Having studied the Zone System in great detail, having calibrated film development systems, having calibrated relationships between exposure-gamma and contrast indices of both film and many different photographic papers and processed film to particular contrast indices using both sensitometry and densitometry to calibrate systems, and having worked in a darkroom for 18 years doing custom printing ...

... HDR is one of the greatest advancements in photographic technique that I've witnessed over my 34 of photography since graduating from an institute of technology, where I did a 4 year professional course in photography, majoring in scientific and industrial photography.

HDR is as valid as using a tripod or changing a lens to enhance a photographic image.

Waren Hudson.

I meant to say in my post above, ... "34 years in photography."

To exclude a valid technique of photography ... is to the detriment of all photography.

What has moved photography to the level it is at today are 'the changes in photographic techniques' and the 'changes in equipment'.

Warren.

:wow: I've just been browsing the comments here and I cant believe the shitstorm this 'no HDR' thing is causing and how bent out of shape people are getting.

The point is not whether HDR = good or bad , or whether your opinions on it are right or wrong - The point IS that its your competition , you have done all the work and organising and its your right to set whatever rules you like.

I personally love Infrared photography, but i can see it doesnt fit with this comp's remit but this doesnt mean I'm going to start a big row about 'why cant i submit IR'

By the way, I think this comp is gonna be huge, and I'll be giving it a stab myself :D

Hey Dave! I think I'm in, hopefully! :D It's amazing, being an HDR user myself, the crap that he is taking about the rules. I wish people would just fuck off, it pisses me off when someone has the attitude of commenting just to disagree... They really need the attention.
Hey Hougaard! Put a "smokers only" rule in it just to see the reaction!:P Muaha!

Sorry for the late reply :)

Totally ageed mate - Hougaards competition , his rules. Its not a fucking witch hunt against HDR - and everyone is entitled to like or dislike whatever techniques they wish.

(how about a comp only open to Nikon users or only Canon users - that would make a few heads explode :D )

Hi!
Random question, how much sky in a picture qualifies it as a sky picture? I was just wondering because if you take a picture of a landscape during a sunset, there's going to be some epic sky going on in it. How can I get my photos to fit your rules?

I was wondering the same thing actually. I read through all the comments, and was a bit surprised that this was the only question about the "sky" rule. (Perhaps there is some set limit we don't know about! :P) But, anyway, how much sky is too much sky? Oh, and is it strictly landscape...or could it be waterscape, or other things found in nature, as well?

Yeaaaa.. The whole concept still has me a bit confused... But I don't quite think that the pictures I really want to enter in contests are acually landscapes... because the land happens to be all dark and silhoutte-y against an epic sunset. Soooo I kinda think mine count as sky pictures...
